Brendan

Brendan is a first name for boys. The name Brendan (and its variants such as BRENNAN) are derived from Brendanus, the Latin form of the Irish name Bréanainn which was in turn derived from a Welsh word meaning "prince".

The legendary Saint Brendan of Clonfert or Bréanainn of Clonfert (c. 484 – c. 578) called "the Navigator" or "the Voyager", was a 6th-century Irish monk who is reputed to have discovered North America. It is claimed that in the 6th century, he and 17 other monks crossed the Atlantic in tiny boats. The legend of Saint Brendan's crossing was known to Christopher Columbus and may have inspired his attempt to reach the New World.
